We seek to build strong, healthy cities by advancing the integration of arts and culture into community revitalization. The arts enrich our lives by encouraging self-expression and awakening curiosity, creativity and the desire for knowledge – which promotes vibrant and diverse communities. By supporting cultural institutions and community organizations, the DTE Energy Foundation is strengthening the economic vitality of cities across Michigan – helping draw visitors, showcase local businesses, and further grow communities.

Priority will be given to organizations or initiatives that:

  • Demonstrate the positive quantifiable economic impact of their arts and cultural programming
  • Serve a diverse population of community members through their arts and culture programming

Recycling Grants, Deadline March 19

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has opened its Recycling Infrastructure grant program to assist with recycling infrastructure projects, such as public space recycling, bin-to-cart transitions, public drop-off recycling locations, and recycling site improvements.

A total of $500,000 is available for fiscal year 2019. Eligible entities include: cities, villages, townships, charter townships, counties, tribal governments, municipal solid waste or resource recovery authorities, school districts, health departments, colleges or universities, and regional planning agencies. Funding or program partners may be for-profit or non-profit organizations, but such entities are not eligible to receive grants. The application deadline is March 1, 2019.

Recycling Grants, Deadline March 19

Scrap Tire Grants, Deadlines Sept. 28 & Oct. 19

MDEQ grant program is open! Scrap tires pose a fire risk and a human health risk as mosquito breeding grounds. Through grants, scrap tires can be processed and used in paving products for roads, manufactured products and energy production.  

The Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant is available for property owners to clean up old or abandoned scrap tire piles. The MDEQ will give priority to collection sites where tires were accumulated prior to January 1, 1991, as well as collection sites that pose an imminent threat to public health, safety, welfare or the environment. Local units of government and non-profit organizations are also eligible for funding for cleanup days and roadside cleanup grants.  

The Market Development Grants are available to fund up to 50 percent of total eligible costs for projects that demonstrate new or increased uses of scrap tires in manufactured products. The MDEQ will prioritize proposals based on the amount of scrap tire material being used in developing the project or product, demonstration of a new use of scrap tire material and demonstration of a viable market for a proposed product.

The Scrap Tire Law Enforcement Grants are available to the law enforcement community for the purchase, installation and implementation of surveillance equipment used to reduce or eliminate instances of illegal dumping of scrap tires.  

The MDEQ will accept Cleanup Grant Applications with all supporting documentation received on or before Friday, September 28, 2018. Market Development and Law Enforcement Grant Applications will be accepted with all supporting documentation on or before Friday, October 19, 2018.

Scrap Tire Grants, Deadlines Sept. 28 & Oct. 19

Community Forestry Grants, Deadline Sept. 1

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) Program in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS) has established the Community Forestry Grants program. Federal funding is provided by the USFS, State and Private Forestry, UCF Program (CFDA 10.664).

Cost-share funds will be available to communities and organizations on a competitive basis for UCF projects in Michigan. A total of up to $100,000 may be granted to eligible projects. This is a 1:1 cost share match program. Federal funds may not be used as part of the required match. Projects must be completed by September 1, 2019.

The purpose and objectives of this program include:

  •  providing financial assistance to communities and organizations to support UCF projects,
  • building local community capacity to manage and care for trees through education and technical assistance,
  • developing long-term street/park and community forestry plans and policies,
  • promoting projects that assist communities in developing sustainable local tree management programs and policies,
  • improving public awareness and understanding of the benefits of preserving and expanding community tree cover,
  • promoting volunteerism and partnership between public, private and nonprofit organizations for public tree care,
  • supporting innovative projects and partnerships that address UCF issues in Michigan,
  • enhancing the technical skills of people involved in planning, managing or maintaining urban and community forests and,
  • Promoting and celebrating Arbor Day, Tree City USA and related events.

FY 2019 COMMUNITY FORESTRY GRANT FUNDING PRIORITIES
Based on the total pool of applications received, up to $100,000 in available funding may be distributed according to the following breakdown:

  • Management, Planning and Innovation projects 50%
  • Education and Training projects 20%
  • Arbor Day Celebration projects 5%

This is a reimbursement grant program. Federal grant monies awarded under this program will be paid only upon evidence of completion of approved projects.

Community Forestry Grants, Deadline Sept. 1

MDNR Aquatic Habitat Grant Program, Deadline Aug. 27 (Pre-Proposals)

Projects that focus on affecting key processes, as opposed to treating symptoms, will be given priority. Key processes include hydrology, connectivity, material recruitment and movement, geomorphology, and water quality.

Eligibility: Any local, state, federal, or tribal units of government, or non-profit groups.

Application Process:

  • Submittal of a pre-proposal
  • Evaluation by DNR staff
  • Submittal of a full grant application (invitation based)
  • Evaluation by DNR staff
  • Final approval of grant awards by the DNR Director

Invitation to submit full applications begins late September
Full applications due mid-November
Awards announced by mid-April
Project period begins upon execution of grant agreement
Project periods are one and a half years (two construction seasons)

MDEQ Recycling Grants, Deadline March 9 2018

The MDEQ is offering communities grants to purchase residential recycling carts. Too often, the lack of recycling collection infrastructure prevents valuable recyclable materials from becoming new products manufactured in Michigan. A proven method for increasing recycling is ensuring that community members have convenient access to recycling opportunities. Communities in the Southeastern Oakland Resource Recovery Authority that received DEQ grants for curbside carts have seen trash volumes decrease and recycling volumes increase 30% in just the first few months after cart delivery.

To assist communities with the purchase of residential recycling carts, the DEQ is offering up to $500,000 during fiscal year 2018. Cities, villages, townships, charter townships, counties, tribal governments and/or municipal solid waste or resource recovery authorities are all welcome to apply. MDEQ Recycling Grants, Deadline March 9 2018

Lighthouse Grants, Deadline Nov. 17

The Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP) was established to assist in the preservation, rehabilitation and protection of historic lighthouses in Michigan. This grant program is managed through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA). Funding for the MLAP comes from the sale of lighthouse license plates. These grant dollars are exclusive to light station rehabilitation and planning projects for light station resources listed or eligible for listing in the National Register.

Eligible Applicants

Nonprofit organizations and state or local governments that own (or are in the process of acquiring) or have long-term leases on a lighthouse are eligible to apply for these funds. Private individuals are not eligible for these grants.

The project must be ready to proceed at the time of application and must not be dependent on future actions, approval, or cooperation from other organizations before the project can begin.

Flood Mitigation Grants, Deadline Nov. 14

The Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program makes Federal funds available to State, Local and Tribal Governments to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings and structures insured under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). In FY17, the FMA Program will prioritize proposals that address community flood risk by setting aside $70 million for this purpose.

FEMA will seek to fund two types of community flood mitigation activities: Advance Assistance for flood mitigation design and development of community flood mitigation projects and mitigation projects that address community flood risk for the purpose of reducing NFIP flood claim payments. The remaining funding, at least $90,000,000, will be used for FMA technical assistance, mitigation planning, and mitigation projects reducing risk to severe repetitive loss (SRL) and repetitive loss (RL) properties.

The purpose of this program is to allow first responders and members of other key community sectors to administer a drug or device approved or cleared under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Grantees will train and provide resources to first responders and members of other key community sectors at the state,tribal, and local governmental levels on carrying and administering a drug or device approved or cleared under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Grantees will also establish processes, protocols, and mechanisms for referral to appropriate treatment and recovery communities.

Eligible applicants include States, American Indian/Alaska Native tribes, tribal organizations, and consortia of tribes or tribal organizations, and local governmental entities including, but not limited to, municipal corporations, counties, cities, boroughs, incorporated towns, and townships.

The Our Town grant program supports creative placemaking projects that help to transform communities into lively, beautiful, and resilient places – achieving these community goals through strategies that incorporate arts, culture, and/or design. Creative placemaking is when artists, arts organizations, and community development practitioners deliberately integrate arts and culture into community revitalization work – placing arts at the table with land-use, transportation, economic development, education, housing, infrastructure, and public safety strategies.

This funding supports local efforts to enhance quality of life and opportunity for existing residents, increase creative activity, and create or preserve a distinct sense of place. Through Our Town, subject to the availability of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide a limited number of grants for creative placemaking. Our Town requires partnerships between arts organizations and government, other nonprofit organizations, and private entities to achieve livability goals for communities. Our Town offers support for projects in two areas: • Arts Engagement, Cultural Planning, and Design Projects. These projects represent the distinct character and quality of their communities. These projects require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity, with one of the partners being a cultural organization. Matching grants range from $25,000 to $200,000.

Through Our Town projects, the National Endowment for the Arts intends to achieve the following objective: Livability: American communities are strengthened through the arts.
