The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) is offering a
grant opportunity to promote the expansion of value-added agriculture production,
processing, and access within the state to enhance Michigan’s food and agriculture
MDARD will accept proposals that are intended to establish, retain, expand, attract
and/or develop value-added agricultural processing in Michigan; expand or develop regional food systems; or expand access to healthy food.
Funding will be focused on the following types of projects:
Food hub development
Food access, including access to fresh/nutritional foods
Value-added food processing
Innovation and equipment
Technical assistance, including feasibility studies that lead to jobs/investment
Outreach and training
Grants will be awarded a maximum amount of $125,000. Applicants must provide a minimum 30% match.
Cash match is required, and in-kind contributions will not be counted as part of the required match.

The Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP) was established to assist in the preservation, rehabilitation and protection of historic lighthouses in Michigan. This grant program is managed through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA). Funding for the MLAP comes from the sale of lighthouse license plates. These grant dollars are exclusive to light station rehabilitation and planning projects for light station resources listed or eligible for listing in the National Register.
Nonprofit organizations and state or local governments that own (or are in the process of acquiring) or have long-term leases on a lighthouse are eligible to apply for these funds. Private individuals are not eligible for these grants.
The project must be ready to proceed at the time of application and must not be dependent on future actions, approval, or cooperation from other organizations before the project can begin.

A grant program is now open for proposals from federally recognized Indian Tribes, Alaska Native Villages, regional or village corporations, tribal organizations, and Tribal Energy Resource Development Organizations to build tribal capacity for energy resource development or management under the Department of the Interior’s Tribal Energy Development Capacity (TEDC) grant program.
For this program, capacity building refers to developing organizational structures, business entity structures, or developing or enhancing regulatory functions, all related to tribal energy development for the purpose of strengthening tribal capacity for development and management of energy projects. There is no cost-sharing requirement. Approximately 35 grants, from $1,000 to $300,000 are expected to be awarded.

The Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program makes Federal funds available to State, Local and Tribal Governments to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings and structures insured under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). In FY17, the FMA Program will prioritize proposals that address community flood risk by setting aside $70 million for this purpose.
FEMA will seek to fund two types of community flood mitigation activities: Advance Assistance for flood mitigation design and development of community flood mitigation projects and mitigation projects that address community flood risk for the purpose of reducing NFIP flood claim payments. The remaining funding, at least $90,000,000, will be used for FMA technical assistance, mitigation planning, and mitigation projects reducing risk to severe repetitive loss (SRL) and repetitive loss (RL) properties.

The purpose of this program is to allow first responders and members of other key community sectors to administer a drug or device approved or cleared under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Grantees will train and provide resources to first responders and members of other key community sectors at the state,tribal, and local governmental levels on carrying and administering a drug or device approved or cleared under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Grantees will also establish processes, protocols, and mechanisms for referral to appropriate treatment and recovery communities.
Eligible applicants include States, American Indian/Alaska Native tribes, tribal organizations, and consortia of tribes or tribal organizations, and local governmental entities including, but not limited to, municipal corporations, counties, cities, boroughs, incorporated towns, and townships.

Under the Small Shipyard Grant Program, there is currently $9,800,000 available for grants for capital and related improvements to qualified shipyard facilities that will be effective in fostering efficiency, competitive operations, and quality ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration. It is anticipated that about 5-12 applications will be selected for funding with an average grant amount of about $1 million.
The shipyard facility for which a grant is sought must be in a single geographical location, located in or near a maritime community, and may not have more than 1,200 production employees. The applicant must be the operating company of the shipyard facility. The shipyard facility must construct, repair, or reconfigure vessels 40 feet in length or greater for commercial or government use, or construct, repair, or reconfigure vessels 100 feet in length or greater for non-commercial vessels.
Eligible projects include: (1) capital and related improvement projects that will be effective in fostering efficiency, competitive operations, and quality ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration; and (2) training projects that will be effective in fostering employee skills and enhancing productivity. For capital improvement projects, all items proposed for funding must be new and to be owned by the applicant. For both capital improvement and training projects, all project costs, including the recipient’s share, must be incurred after the date of the grant agreement.

The Our Town grant program supports creative placemaking projects that help to transform communities into lively, beautiful, and resilient places – achieving these community goals through strategies that incorporate arts, culture, and/or design. Creative placemaking is when artists, arts organizations, and community development practitioners deliberately integrate arts and culture into community revitalization work – placing arts at the table with land-use, transportation, economic development, education, housing, infrastructure, and public safety strategies.
This funding supports local efforts to enhance quality of life and opportunity for existing residents, increase creative activity, and create or preserve a distinct sense of place. Through Our Town, subject to the availability of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide a limited number of grants for creative placemaking. Our Town requires partnerships between arts organizations and government, other nonprofit organizations, and private entities to achieve livability goals for communities. Our Town offers support for projects in two areas: • Arts Engagement, Cultural Planning, and Design Projects. These projects represent the distinct character and quality of their communities. These projects require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity, with one of the partners being a cultural organization. Matching grants range from $25,000 to $200,000.

Funding proposals for 2017 now are being accepted through the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program, with an anticipated $3.6 million available to applicants. The program – a joint effort of the Michigan departments of Natural Resources, Environmental Quality, and Agriculture and Rural Development – is part of a statewide initiative launched in 2014 to help prevent and control invasive species in Michigan.
Proposals to advance methods of aquatic invasive plant control are being sought in 2017, as well as those undertaking surveillance for emerging or potential infestations of hemlock woolly adelgid, balsam woolly adelgid, thousand cankers disease and/or Asian longhorned beetle in Michigan.
Invasive species prevention activities are highlighted in this year’s program, including those that reduce the risk of spreading invasive species through movement of firewood, a primary pathway for tree diseases and pests. Proposals addressing the spread of invasive species through recreational activities including land and water trail use, boating, angling, hunting and camping, also are encouraged.
Local, state, federal and tribal units of government, nonprofit organizations and universities may apply for funding to support invasive species projects conducted in Michigan. For this 2017 funding cycle, pre-proposals will be accepted through June 13 and requested full proposals must be submitted by Sept. 18.
Grant requests for 2017 projects can range from a minimum of $25,000 to a maximum of $400,000. Applicants must commit to provide 10 percent of the total project cost in the form of a local match.Competitive applications will outline clear objectives, propose significant ecological benefits, demonstrate diverse collaboration and show strong community support.

The focus of the Projects Support Category is to provide quality arts and cultural, as well as educational, projects to citizens across the state. This category funds specific arts projects conducted by non-profit organizations, municipalities and educational institutions and other organizations that utilize the talents and creativity of professional artists or arts educators in all arts disciplines to advance the creative, cultural and economic environment of the state.

Capital Improvement Program
The Capital Improvement grant category provides funding assistance to Michigan nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and municipalities for the expansion, renovation or construction of cultural facilities; upgrade of equipment and furnishing to provide a competitive and up-to-date environment; equipment and instrument acquisitions that are integral to the implementation of events and services. The improvements resulting from these grants enable citizens of all ages and abilities to enjoy more cultural events while increasing their participation within their communities.
